Matthew Gellman holds a Bachelors degree in English Literature and Sociology from Skidmore College and a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University, where his concentration was Poetry. Matthew first began tutoring at Skidmore College’s Writing Center in the Fall of 2013, where he gained a substantial amount of experience working with ESL students. Currently, aside from tutoring with Cohen Math Prep, Matthew tutors at the Writing Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he works with students of all different backgrounds to help them develop their writing skills. In addition to helping students with their course work for English classes and a wide variety of Social Studies classes, Matthew is available to help students prepare for the AP Exams in English and History, the English Literature SAT Subject Test and the SAT Verbal section. He is also happy to work with students on their personal statements for their college applications, as well as a wide range of ELA assignments, ranging from history papers to close-reading exercises.

In his free time, Matthew enjoys going to the beach, taking long walks, reading and meditating. He is also a practicing poet whose poems have been published in Narrative, the Common, Poetry Northwest, Ninth Letter, the Missouri Review and elsewhere. He is passionate about bridging creative and critical writing in order to help students see the writing process as dynamic and personal, one that allows for a deeper conversation with the self.
